Hey DJ, Play my Coffee…

Retail Strategy Add comments

You heard it right, in coming months, this is what you could be ordering at your favorite cafe coffee day, or CCD as it is lovingly known. The news is in, that CCD is pushing the bar, and now plans to open 900+ stores by 2009, and with that, some new formats too, and this is not it, out of these new stores, they plan to open at least 50 of them outside the Indian boundaries. They currently have 595 cafes across 100 Indian cities, Three in Vienna and Two in Karachi.

Some of the planned store formats include, Cafe Day Square and Cafe Day Lounge, While the square format would be the flagship outlet, specialising into single origin coffee’s, The lounge format would be where they will experiment to give you a dine-in feature, by coupling food with coffee, and a slow ambiance for you to settle down. The third, but yet-not-disclosed format is speculated to be a coffee bar, with right attitude and music.

This article should be of a help to settle down your CCD’s exapansion queries, while I keep my fingers crossed, that the expansion plan is not inflated, and they don’t end up like starbucks, coz I love my Tropical Iceberg ;)

CCD is definitely one of the very few Indian marketers I adore :) They have expanded so wonderfully over the years!
It might have something to do with the fact that I was present when CCD opened it’s first sit-in Chennai outlet, on tony Numgambakkam’s tonier Ispahani Center, in 2000. To be frank it was CCD’s neighbour BOSE that drew me to the mall.
While walking in through the maginificent facade of the complex, I could see a floor-to-ceiling glass wall on the 3rd or 4th floor. Colourful plastic chairs were visible through the glass. And….I could see equally colourful young junta occupying them. No, sadly, their elevation and my exponential angle of sight did not reveal anything interesting. After all It was Chennai in 2000!
After my heart-broken exit from the BOSE store, I walked in to the CCD. Loud sub-woofer driven (novel in 2000) pop music enveloped me & I could hardly find a vacant seat among the seemingly hundreds of teeny-boppers screaming over their steaming cuppas.
As I was living alone those days, I put in a lot of efforts to get myself seated. It was a self-service model, which CCD discarded somewhere down the years.

The outlet offered Cappucino at a ridiculous price of Rs. 6, which I promptly ordered for. That “was” cheap, as in those days one could otherwise get a “proper” cappu only at dimly lit 5 Star coffee shops. The rates, after taxes, were always in triple digits.

I was hooked! In spite of my age mismatch with the happening” crowds at CCDs, I somehow never felt out of place! OK, OK, I enjoyed that bit, at times, too ;-P
And if it please you, I still do…

However, the moot point remains that CCD sold much more than coffee at affordable rates. At the time when the suave Baristas were aping 5 star ambience, CCD understood the poer of the “young” Indian, their need for a “cool” surrounding at rates that would not dent their pocket-money and I think, most crucially, without making them change 3 buses or walking miles.
Amazingly CCDs always managed great locations. There were mistakes, but very swiftly eliminated, with surgical precision.
Over the past 8 years CCD has morphed wonderfully, tailoring their ambience & menu according to local tastes and budgets.
They never looked down upon the tattered jeans, tatooed arm types, neither did they kneel before the BMW toting iPhone junta.
Their skilful presence at the airports, while the aviation sector was opening up, gave their image the right fillip & their frankly-frugal set ups always communicated the VFM proposition, irrespective of their locations.
CCD does merit to be on marketing case studies.
It is still a highly undervalued brand!

    I wish them more success.
May the caffeine keep running through your veins & may your constantly brewing brains surprise us with more wonderful experiences.

    Cudos to u CCD.

I guess Arnab has almost filled the entire cup to the brim. Truly they have left a special presence with the coffee lovers. Imagine having close to 5 Outlets within the Connaught Place circle! in Delhi. Thats like, if its coffee its us boss.
They even took the “Take Away” concept so seriously that they launched Coffee Day Xpress! and not to mention the wee hours that they are open in some places, where you have some of the most memorable instances in life :)

    Cool Blue rocks!
