Do we need a retail university? I agree that retail is booming in India - atleast on the papers it is, but are we clear about retail management programs? or are all these course are going to end up getting mixed with general management courses! I feel we need to bring more clarity to retail management first, then the universities!

    Hi Sarthak,

You are absolutely right. Seeing the delay in FDI and protest against organized retail in many states, wvwn i am confused that how will retail do in future. I remember two years back when we joined our MBA-Retail, we were quite positive that by the time we will complete it, FDI issue will be resolved and Organized Retailing will be widely accepted in India. Though things have improved but it’s not significant. Infact I think that there has been proliferation in Retail space (both new retailers and new stores) but no major improvement.

Keeping all this in mind, where will they find jobs for these graduaates? Will it again produce hundreds of jobless MBA’s every year? Will they get quality of job they deserve? Dose industrty actually need them?

Moreover as you have mentioned, we also need clarity to Retail Management. They need to understand that same size might not fit all. The theories developed in US might not work in India. Price senstive consumers of India may not look at your VM but at valur for money. Their are various such issues which they need to address.

Lets see how they work it out. I hope things will change by 2010 when they will start commencing. Being a Retail-MBA I wish that this university will develop graduates which will help India to grow in Retail Space (and not on papers only ;) )
