Retail Dude

As per the polls, majority of people i.e. 67% thinks that Retail Destinations like Malls, Hyper Market, Multiplexes, Food Courts etc are not secured. People feel that retailers are not having check and it is very easy for anyone to carry anything inside. They feel that retailers are only concerned about shoplifting and they are ignoring other security aspect.  

19% believe that these places are secured as there is tight security. We can see that security has been tightening in multiplexes after the blast which took place once. A minority of 5% feel that these places are secured as movements are tracked through CCTV. But there are various dead places which CCTV doesn’t cover and some places like changing room, wash rooms etc where CCTV can’t be used. Even in recent Taj Mahal case CCTV are helping after the attack only.

A good chunk i.e. 14% are confused that whether these places are secured or not.

Though this poll dose not require any analysis as IRCTC is way ahead of other options. We would rather compare these stats as use of rail website vs. others (air & road). In India use of rail transport is more common that any other mode because it is comfortable and economical. Though we cannot underestimate road transport based on these stats as people generally don’t book bus tickets online.In this pie we have ignored ‘Red Bus’ and ‘Rediff Fares’ as no one voted for them.

If we observe, total number of tickets booked online as a percentage of total tickets sold for both rail transport and air transport, we will see that the air transport is way ahead. But still we have more penetration for IRCTC because of more use of rail transport. Following is the stats which shows the use of online booking for rail transport in India for 2007-08 published by Business Line:

From the above pie it’s very clear that our readers are very positive about Retail and they don’t think that there is a slowdown in retail. 56% of voters said that there is no slowdown, 20% voted in favor of slowdown where as 12% preferred to wait and watch. As per the polls there is no slowdown. In Retail rather these are happening as people are panicking from US recession. This is a temporary situation which has been created as people jumped into Organized Retail band wagon in an unorganized manner and so closures and decline in sales are part of long awaited corrections and consolidation in Retail. But a major chunk of voters are of opinion that the hold in expansion plans and closures are due to slowdown in retail as consumers have started spending less and market size is decreasing. Well no body agrees that losses in balance sheet of retailer are a proof of slowdown.
